Mixolydian b5
When playing over a Dominant 7th chord, the Mixolydian Mode (the 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, b7 notes of the Major Scale) is often the go-to choice.
While that works well, if we take those notes, and alter one of them, we can add some different colors/sounds to our playing.
Let's try taking the 5th note, and moving it flat one step (or fret).
This gives us: 1, 2, 3, 4, b5, 6, b7
Below, let's look at the A Mixolydian mode in 2 positions between the 4th and 10th frets. First, we have the regular Mixolydian mode, and below it, the same pattern, but with a flat 5th.
Once you get the hang of it, try using these patterns to solo over the backing track (below).

Luca Benedetti is a Brooklyn-based guitarist, composer, and producer known for his unique blend of jazz, blues, and Americana.
Luca's upbringing was anything but conventional. Originally from Rome, Italy, Luca developed a passion for the guitar at a young age, drawing inspiration from jazz greats, blues legends, and the twangy sounds of classic country pickers.
Luca spent his early years moving between Italy, New York City, Connecticut, Africa, and Bangkok. This diverse cultural exposure has significantly influenced his musical style, giving it a rich, global flavor.
Luca then honed his skills at the Berklee College of Music under the mentorship of jazz legend Ron Carter. After graduating, he immersed himself in the New York City music scene, collaborating with a wide array of artists, including Jim Campilongo, Hermine Deurloo, Steve Gadd, and Martha Redbone.
He quickly became a sought-after session and live guitarist, performing with a wide range of artists and bringing his signature blend of tastefulness and technical skill to every project. Whether he’s laying down silky jazz lines, chicken-pickin’ country licks, or weaving through intricate improvisations, Luca’s playing is always soulful and deeply musical.
